California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones held a hearing March 21, 2014 to explore the issues surrounding insurance and “Transportation Network Companies”. Several representatives from the San Francisco taxi industry, including myself and SFCDA Vice President Jeffrey Rosen, testified as to the shortcomings of the policies approved by the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) September decision allowing these de facto taxi services to operate.
As a result, Commissioner Dave Jones issued a letter to the CPUC, advising them to remedy this situation. We feel that although this letter poignantly outlines the inconsistencies and gaps in current TNC coverage, his recommendations fall short of what is truly needed, full-time commercial “livery” insurance, 24/7 365 days a year, as taxi and charter party carriers are required to carry. The SFCDA is currently working with state legislators and continues to testify at the State Capitol to ensure this will be required if these services continue to exist.
